Voice Communication Control System

Voice Communication Control System (VCCS/VCS)

VCCS

The VCS allows Air Traffic Control Operators (ATCOs) to manage and access their Air to Ground and Ground to Ground communications including the radios and ground telecom links. Advanced functions such as channel coupling, instant position replay, and telephone patching are provided by the VCS adding additional capability to that provided by the radios on their own.

Full function Touch Screen VCS Systems are available from multiple suppliers, but there are also a growing number of suppliers, often the same manufacturer, that can provide a “cut down” VCS that would normally be installed as an Emergency VCS (EVCS) to provide a simpler set of functions. This reduced function set could be suitable for a Mobile or temporary tower and may radically reduce the cost of any given system. MATC is always happy to discuss individual requirements to ensure that the customer procures the most cost-effective solution as often customers may also wish to minimise through life costs on training and logistics by specifying a system from existing suppliers. VCS systems are available as analogue, ED136 VoIP or “Hybrid” solutions.

Testimonials

MATC are a responsive, flexible contractor. They enabled us to support the demands of our end user customer through program reviews, training, and product acceptance events.  At all stages we were kept informed on progress with regular project updates provided for the duration of the contract. MATC displayed excellent programme and risk management procedures throughout which kept this complex project on track.

The motive for purchasing the Mobile Air Traffic Control Tower was to provide all airports in Lithuania with a quick deployment back up ATC capability within SWIM enabled features by using common fibre links that have been installed at all Lithuanian international airports. Mobile ATC Systems were flexible so we (Oro Navigacija) were able to use in house facilities to integrate the MATC Cabin to meet our needs; this has worked very well for us.

Mobile ATC Systems Ltd helped us to carry out a complex shipment requirement from the manufacturer with a professional approach and good communications. Everything was done in a timely manner and there were no issues with the services we received. We would be happy to engage with Mobile ATC for future service needs.

MATC delivered three ORCs to UNICEF for outreach primary healthcare in Eritrea. Colin Chapman delivered end user training in Asmara to the Health Ministry and UNICEF personnel. Geoffrey Acaye, Chief of Child Survival and Development said “Thank you too for being so supportive in this phase of the project. We will certainly reach out to you for any further support whenever required. I am confident that this initial phase will stimulate the interest of the Government and donors to expand further”.

FAQ's

Why do I need a Voice Communication Switch (VCS)?

The VCS allows an ATC Operator to interface to their radio and telephone communications system through a single headset or handset. The improves efficiency particularly if there are several frequencies or telephone lines that must be managed at the same time. The VCS also provides several functions that may be important to ATC Towers such as patching of telephone calls to radios, cross-coupling of radio channels and main standby radio selection to mention just a few. However, if the role of the operator in the tower only requires access to a single radio and a telephone then it is possible that a VCS will not be required and the cost of the ATC tower can be reduced accordingly.

How many VCS Positions do I need?

Usually there is one operating position per controller. Therefore, the way the tower is used will dictate the number of positions required. The larger towers can accommodate 3 positions (4 if the cabin is extended) and the smaller towers 2 positions. Most VCS positions allow a supervisor to “Jack-in” through the communications panel and so a standing supervisor can still access the VCS if required.

What happens if the VCS fails?

VCS are designed to have no single point of failure and can be installed to have back up power supplies if required. This should eliminate any chance of a complete system failure. However, if in the highly unlikely event that they do then the radios, which are deemed to be safety critical, can be accessed from the front panel by a microphone for the transmitter and a radio speaker on the receiver. A desk mount “fallback” radio can also be provided for an emergency spare. A dedicated telephone line could also installed directly for emergency communications if deemed necessary.
